I used to hate scott remember the first seasons I think the first two or three seasons ? ( yep I do watch the show when am chanced to ) I thought he was a complete jerk especially when he shoved in that poor hapless las vegas waiters throat.. (he is lucky cos there are those who would have punched his lights out for that humiliation.) but he has mystifyingly turned his persona around and made a joke out of it.. I actually like watching his antics now. without him the show would be one kim showing out bore fest and mama jenner control freak fest

yes, she and rob are formally educated and I think Kourtney has a broader view having experienced life outside the Kardashian kbubble , I think she dances to her own drumbeat and is much more difficult for her mother to control her than the others
don't see & listed as a special character in the documentation: dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/fulltext-boolean.html. Are you sure it's not because M&S is too short to be indexed? See the ft_min_word_len option, it defaults to 4. Barmar Jun 16 at 7:39
@Barmar ft_min_word_len is set to 2 as we have quite a few very short company names. Rob Forrest Jun 16 at 7:40

Another possibility is that & is treated as a word delimiter. So that's actually two words: M and S with punctuation between them. Barmar Jun 16 at 7:42

See dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/fulltext-fine-tuning.html for how to change the characters that are considered part of a word rather than delimiters. Barmar Jun 16 at 7:45
@Barmar I tried set global ft_boolean_syntax = '+ -><()~*:""_|'; to remove the & from the syntax but that appears to have made no difference. Perhaps Positions 10, 13, and 14 (which by default are set to :, &, and |) are reserved for future extensions prevents that. Rob Forrest Jun 16 at 7:56
The following query is also getting you the result
SELECT * FROM `testing` WHERE `name` REGEXP CONVERT( _utf8 'M&S'
USING latin1 ) COLLATE latin1_german2_ciLIMIT 0 , 30
please also read this thread, maybe you can understand it better then me. This is SQL but they seem to have solved the problem
sorry I couldnt help more

This question is very specifically about fulltext searching, i.e. Match (x) Against (y) not like so your 1st and 3rd suggestions aren't really solutions. As for your second suggestion, that doesn't return the expected results as MySQL treats the & as a special character. Rob Forrest 17 mins ago
the OP specifically said that you can't use LIKE ... it does pull it out when using like which is a good example.. but the I think the IN BOOLEAN MODE makes the & a non escapable special character John Ruddell 15 mins ago
regexp is a complex search tool and it was a suggestion. Normaly & is no special char, but what john said makes sense veritaS 13 mins ago
yea its not a special character that mysql recognizes to escape... but it seems like the boolean mode does that. it seems like the OP is stuck using the MATCH ... AGAINST.. method, do you know of a way to work with that parameter? John Ruddell 40 secs ago
A phrase that is enclosed within double quote (") characters matches only rows that contain the phrase literally, as it was typed.dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/fulltext-boolean.html veritaS 14 secs ago
The MySQL extension is:
Not under active development
Officially deprecated (as of PHP 5.5. It's likely to be removed in the next major release.)
Lacks an OO interface
Doesn't support:
Non-blocking, asynchronous queries
Prepared statements or parameterized queries
Stored procedures
Multiple Statements
Transactions
All of the functionality in MySQL 5.1
Since it is deprecated, using it makes your code less future proof.
Lack of support for prepared statements is particularly important as they provide a clearer, less error prone method of escaping and quoting external data than manually escaping it with a separate function call.
See the comparison of SQL extensions.

Deprecated alone is reason enough to avoid them. They will not be there one day, and you will not be happy if you rely on them. The rest is just a list of things that using the old extensions has kept people from learning. Tim Post Oct 12 '12 at 13:26

Deprecation isn't the magic bullet everyone seems to think it is. PHP itself will not be there one day, yet we rely on the tools we have at our disposal today. When we have to change tools, we will. Lightness Races in Orbit Dec 24 '12 at 14:29

@LightnessRacesinOrbit Deprecation isn't a magic bullet, it is a flag that says "We recognise this sucks so we aren't going to support it for much longer". While having better future proofing of code is a good reason to move away from the deprecated features, it isn't the only one (or even the main one). Change tools because there are better tools, not because you are forced to. (And changing tools before you are forced to means that you aren't learning the new ones just because your code has stopped working and needs fixing yesterday which is the worst time to learn new tools). Lacking an OO interface is a non-argument in this discussion.
